Celebration of Gourds 2008
A Gourd
Festival!
2008 Featured Artist
Robert Rivera
| In 1974 Robert Rivera was driving by a farmer’s field in San Luis Rey, California. He was immediately attracted to the huge array of gourds in all shapes and sizes scattered about. Fascinated by this strange, new, natural canvas, he purchased a number of the gourds to take home to New Mexico. With a great leap of faith in his art, his God, and the humble gourd, it wasn’t long before he quit his job in order to devote all of his time to creating his unique pieces of gourd art. Robert who is of Spanish, French and Indian descent loves the designs found in the Native American cultures. His interpretation of the historic and pre-historic designs of the ancient Anasazi, Hohokam, Mimbres, and Acoma tribes have inspired many of his original works. Since that fateful day in 1974, Robert has created an amazing body of work, including Butterfly Maidens, Effigy gourds, Zuni Water Maidens, Kachinas, masks, fetishes, storytellers, and so many other vessels and sculptures. Today, Robert and his works are admired, respected and sought after by collectors of Southwestern and contemporary art throughout the world. |
